Well put. There are many answers to this question. The most common reason given for the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was to get Japan to surrender instead of possibly a million Americans being killed in the the planned invasion of Japan. Some say that Japan was ready to surrender anyway and that the Americans only dropped the bomb to scare the Russian who we viewed as a possible enemy after the war.
